Dogania subplana (Malayan Softshell Turtle)

The common name of this Softshelled Turtle in English is commonly called Malayan Softshell Turtle, Malayan soft-shelled turtle and Thai name called ตะพาบแก้มแดง (Dta-paap Kam Daeng), ปลาฝาดำ (Pla Faa Dam).

Dogania subplana is a species of the Malayan Soft-shelled Turtle Genus (Dogania) within the Softshell Turtle Family (Trionychidae), Superfamily Trionychoidea, in the Suborder Cryptodira, in the Turtles Order (Testudines), in the Reptile Class (Reptilia), in the Chordate Phylum (Chordata) in the Animal Kingdom (Animalia).

Geographic Range

Dogania subplana has been recorded from southern Myanmar (Mergui Islands), western and southern Thailand (including Phuket), Malaysia (Peninsular including Pulau Tioman, Sarawak and Sabah), Indonesia (Java, Sumatra, Kalimantan, Singkep, Natuna Besar), Singapore, and the Philippines (Palawan, Luzon, Mindoro, and Mindanao).

Occurrence in Brunei Darussalam is likely but needs verification.

Habitat and Ecology

Dogania subplana usually occurs in small clear-water streams in forested areas, including secondary forest. It is also present in semi urban areas, rice fields, and abandoned mining ponds.
